Unsere Region kann sich gl\u00fccklich sch\u00e4tzen, die vollst\u00e4ndigsten aufzeichnungen \u00fcber die Grampian-Taconic-orogenese zu besitzen. Ein geologisches ereignis, das vor etwa 500 millionen jahren begann und landmassen umfasste, die heute in den Appalachen (Nordamerika), Gr\u00f6nland, Nordwestirland und Schottland zu finden sind, mit beweisen f\u00fcr das \u00f6ffnen und schlie\u00dfen des Iapetus-Ozeans. Dabei entstanden vulkanische und magmatische b\u00f6gen, metamorphismus (einschlie\u00dflich der bildung des gr\u00fcnen Connemara-Marmors) und regionale verformungen, die mit der entstehung eines bedeutenden gebirgszuges verbunden waren. Dank dieser verschiedenen prozesse weist die region eine gro\u00dfe geologische vielfalt auf, mit aufschl\u00fcssen eines breiten spektrums von gesteinen aller haupttypen (eruptivgestein, sedimentgestein und metamorphes gestein), einem reichen fossilienbestand f\u00fcr die geologischen perioden Ordovizium, Silur und Karbon sowie belegen f\u00fcr zahlreiche faltungen und verwerfungen im hochland. Irlands einziger Fjord liegt in <a href=\"https:\/\/joycecountrygeoparkproject.ie\/attractions\/geosite-killary-fjord\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Killary Harbour<\/a> am Wild Atlantic Way inmitten einer riesigen und vielf\u00e4ltigen, durch gletscher gepr\u00e4gten landschaft mit bergen und den ebenen rund um unsere gro\u00dfen seen. Durch den kalkstein in der \u00f6stlichen h\u00e4lfte unseres gebiets haben sich bedeutende karst- und epikarstlandschaften entwickelt. Herausragend ist hier die <a href=\"https:\/\/joycecountrygeoparkproject.ie\/attractions\/geosites\/cong-woods-karst-landscape\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Landenge von Cong<\/a>, wo sich einer der am schnellsten flie\u00dfenden quellkomplexe der welt und mehrere h\u00f6hlensysteme befinden. In unserer region gibt es hochmoore im hochland, fruchtbares grasland \u00fcber kalksteinfelsen im tiefland, ausgedehnte nadelw\u00e4lder sowie urspr\u00fcngliche w\u00e4lder, kalksteinplatten und viele seen und fl\u00fcsse. In diesen lebensr\u00e4umen ist wiederum eine vielzahl von s\u00e4ugetieren, v\u00f6geln und pflanzen zu hause. Einige dieser lebensr\u00e4ume stehen unter nationalem gesetzlichem artenschutz f\u00fcr ihre bewohner, wie z. B. wasserv\u00f6gel (m\u00f6wen, schw\u00e4ne,seeschwalben), die in den gro\u00dfen seen nisten, die kleine hufeisenfledermaus in ihrem n\u00f6rdlichsten europ\u00e4ischen lebensraum und viele andere. Die seen und fl\u00fcsse werden auch f\u00fcr das angeln auf wildlachs und forelle genutzt (seit den 1950er Jahren findet in Ballinrobe j\u00e4hrlich der weltcup im fliegenfischen auf forellen statt). Die region hatte auch eine starke spirituelle bedeutung mit eindeutigen historischen verbindungen zur fr\u00fchen christlichen kirche in Irland und insbesondere zu St. Patrick, St. Brendan (dem seefahrer) und St. Fursa. Sp\u00e4ter im mittelalter waren die \u00f6stlichen ufer der seen ein bollwerk des widerstands gegen die anglo-normannische invasion, die stark ausgebaut wurden. Dabei entstanden im grenzgebiet der seen viele burgen. Im 17. und 18. jahrhundert ver\u00e4nderte sich die landschaft radikal. Vieh und wildtiere wurden von den bergen vertrieben und moderne landwirtschaftliche praktiken hielten einzug, was zur entwicklung einer umwelt f\u00fchrte, wie wir sie heute kennen. Mit dem bau neuer stra\u00dfen, eisenbahntrassen, kaianlagen und minen wurde die region dann wesentlich besser erschlossen. Die trag\u00f6die der Gro\u00dfen Hungersnot war in der region besonders stark zu sp\u00fcren: ganze d\u00f6rfer wurden verlassen, von denen heute nur noch ruinen \u00fcbrig sind. Ber\u00fchmte ereignisse des irischen unabh\u00e4ngigkeitskrieges fanden hier statt, und die besondere sprache und kultur des westlichen teils unserer region f\u00fchrte mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts zur schaffung der formellen verwaltung der Gaeltacht im neuen irischen Staat.
