The Twelve Bens (or Twelve Pins or Beanna Beola), offer panoramic views of Connemara, right down to the coast. The peaks are made from quartzite – the same as the Maumturks range standing at the east – and the tallest, Benbaun, stands at 729m. The glaciers of the Quaternary Period shaped the peaks and valleys into what we see today. The Western Way long-distance walking trail passes close to the Maumturk Mountains.
