Geoparks are places of internationally significant geology, managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and economic development. Community Development (part of Project Ireland 2040), also from a multi-agency partnership, and 10 years of committed volunteer work. The \u20ac1.19 million project, led by Geological Survey Ireland, provided the basis for employing 3 full-time staff. Michael Hegarty (Geopark Manager), Dr Benjamin Th\u00e9baudeau (Geopark Geologist) and Dominic O&#8217;M\u00f3r\u00e1in (Tourism Officer, funded by \u00dadar\u00e1s na Gealtachta) who remain based in Tourmakeady County Mayo. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burrengeopark.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Burren &amp; Cliffs of Moher<\/a>, County Clare; <a href=\"https:\/\/cuilcaghlakelands.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cuilcagh Lakelands<\/a> in County Fermanagh and County Cavan; and <a href=\"https:\/\/mournegullionstrangfordgeopark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mourne Gullion Strangford<\/a> in County Down and County Armagh. The plan describes the geopark and its governance, its budget and staff, its vision, the various partners and stakeholders, a SWOT analysis and a list of actions planned for its future. This great tool clarifies the operations of the geopark and the strategy for its development. It is aligned with the UN SDGs in particular Goal 17 which deals with strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development. The plan was officially launched in February 2023. The basis of this is the region\u2019s fantastic geological history of international significance and how it has shaped our landscape, the way people live and the rich heritage that we can now promote and enjoy more than ever. To help guide such tourism momentum, a new Tourism Development Strategy has been developed for the area by the project with expert input from an experienced facilitator. A brief document, it describes the vision, includes a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) and a look at living with and beyond COVID-19. A very important section is the Geopark Charter \u2013 a set of principles which guides our partnerships with businesses, communities, etc, all of whom are asked to subscribe and uphold these principles in the development of the Geopark. Initially a two-year project (2020-2021), its key aim is to put in place the resources and structures to achieve UNESCO Global Geopark status. Geoparks are places of internationally significant geology, managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and economic development. The \u20ac1.19 million project, led by Geological Survey Ireland, recently employed 3 full-time staff. Michael Hegarty (Geopark Manager), Dr Benjamin Th\u00e9baudeau (Geopark Geologist) and Dominic O&#8217;M\u00f3r\u00e1in (Tourism Officer, funded by \u00dadar\u00e1s na Gealtachta) are based in Tourmakeady County Mayo. The Project Manager Dr Siobh\u00e1n Power and Amrine Dubois Gafar (Project Geologist) are based in Geological Survey Ireland in Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are currently three UNESCO Global Geoparks on the island of Ireland: Copper Coast in County Waterford; Burren &amp; Cliffs of Moher, County Clare; and Marble Arch Caves in County Fermanagh and County Cavan.
