MOORE HALL AND LOUGH CARRA

Originally called Fionn Loch Ceara, to describe the lough’s white colour, we now know the colour is due to the presence of marl

Marl forms when water is supersaturated with calcite. It provides a unique habitat for the insects, flowers, birds and mammals living there. Moore Hall, an 18th Century mansion, was destroyed by anti-treaty forces during the Irish Civil War in 1923.

You can find further information on the lake, its wildlife and the threats for its future on recently produced videos from the EPA (在此), the Eco Eye episode from 2021 (在此) and on the Lough Carra Life project website.
