Place Name recording event in Tourmakeady Heritage Week

Tar agus inis dúinn scéalta na talún

Joyce Country and Western Lakes Geopark (Geopháirc Dhúiche Sheoigheach agus Lochanna an Iarthair), in partnership with Joyce Country and Western Lakes GeoEnterprise, is organising this place name recording event for the communities of Tuar Mhic Éadaigh and of the Partry mountains.

The event will take place in the Community Hall in Tourmakeady from 3pm to 5pm on Wednesday the 21st of August and will allow local people to come in and record the names of knolls and hillocks, streams and cliff faces and any other features that are not yet on any map. The geopark team will be on-hand to record digitally the information given and share it on the meitheal section of the logainm.ie website and on future maps of the locality.

Following the publication in 2020 of the booklet entitled “Place Names and Geology in the Joyce Country and Western Lakes region”, the geopark team and the Joyce Country and Western Lakes GeoEnterprise continues on its endeavour to shine a light on this very precious interaction between our landscape and our cultural heritage. This event continues on from similar events in the Lough Nafooey and Clonbur areas.

Everyone is welcome but we are particularly looking for people with knowledge on the area’s place names and its history. If anybody is unavailable to join us during the event, please contact the geopark geologist at [email protected].
